displayeder reports from -- lu displ ader, reports the president obama will accept the nomination for president tonight. >>reporter: there has been some last minute drama here tonight, but bill clinton largely stuck to his script and made the case for president obama. one convention, two presidents, president obama came on stage to thank former president clinton for what amounted to a full-throated endorsement. >> i proudly nominate him to be the standard bear of the democratic party. >>reporter: he would hold the stage here for over an hour, well over his allotted time, but he fired up this crowd and he asked a question that has vexed democrats for four days, are we better off now than we were four years ago. >> we were losing 750,000 jobs a month, are we doing better than that today? the answer is yes. >>reporter: in the end the clinton speech is exactly what the obama campaign wanted, but not everything here has gone by the script.

>> all those delegates opposed say no. in the opinion of the -- let me do that again. >>reporter: for starters, the party had to make an awkward revision to its platform which had omitted references to god and jerusalem, a big issue for supporters of israel, and another complication, workers had to start dismantling the enormous stage at bank of america stadium. the planned venue for president obama's speech tonight was nixed officially because of threatening weather, but a party official admitted to having difficulties finding enough people to fill the stands. it means the -- it means that president obama will be back on this smaller stage tonight to accept the democratic nomination. and this 20,000-seat arena will be much easier to fill and they'll probably have to turn some people away. in charlotte, doug lieu glaider, fox new -- lu displ ader, fox news. >> fox 5 will broadcast president obama's acceptance speech tonight beginning at 10:00. then stay tuned for fox 5 news

records from before 2010 were stolen. a letter sent anonymously to newspapers and political officers in tennessee demanded $1 million or else the tax records will be disclosed. romney's accounting firm, price, waterhouse, cooper says there's no evidence any of romney's tax files were stolen. mitt romney is now preparing for next month's debates, meanwhile this morning on the campaign trail, republican vice presidential nominee paul ryan is campaigning in colorado. yesterday he wrapped up a two- day swing through iowa and utah. he says speakers at the democratic convention won't talk about the last four years, pu the romney and obama campaigns will be at competing events in new hampshire tomorrow. checking some of the morning's other top stories for you, prince george's county police are trying to figure out what led to the stabbing of a 17-year-old stab -- stabbing of a 17-year-old high school student. it happened yesterday in the 6700 block of bell crest road

in high atsville, about a mile from northwestern high school. the school was put on lockdown as a precaution. the student is expected to be all right. a 12-year-old boy from port washington entered what's called an alford plea in an involuntary manslaughter in the beating of a 2-year-old foster girl living with his family. in return, prosecutors dropped the more serious charge of second-degree murder. the boy's plea was not an admission of guilt, but rather an acknowledgement that prosecutors had enough evidence to win the case in court. the little girl was found unresponsive in her foster family's home earlier this summer. d.c. police are investigating whether a second attack on capitol hill in less than three weeks is connected to a beating that left a man in a coma. >> both men were robbed and beaten on north carolina avenue and southeast. melanie is live at police headquarters with the latest on this. melanie, good morning. >>reporter: good morning, allison. well, the victim in this latest attack says there was a witness. now, he was attacked tuesday

night. he was kicked, he was punched, he was robbed of his cell phone and that sounds very similar to what happened just a few weeks ago in the case that has capitol hill neighbors so rattled. this victim's name is is casey adams. he says two men jumped him, they caught him off guard while he was talking to his wife on his cell phone, and he was walking home after midnight. the 26-year-old now has cuts on his face and a fat lip. police are looking into whether that late night attack is connected to the other one a couple of weeks ago. tc mazlein was beaten and robbed as well on august 18th, both crimes on north carolina avenue southeast on eastern market in capitol hill. police released surveillance video last week. they say the people in this 2005 hundai sonata were using the credit card near the crime scene. adams moved to d.c. just a week ago and said he didn't know about the on masslein. he's come forward to make sure more people are aware of what's going on. >> i'm seeing single women

walking down the street at midnight. i'm seeing single guys walking down the street at midnight, so hopefully this reaches them that it's important not to be alone, even after midnight. >> so i'm expecting that our bars and taverns that when they let out at night, you know, after 1:00 in the morning, we have to really let the patrons know that you've gotta walk in groups, until we get a handle on this, they gotta walk in groups and our taverns have to be very responsible in telling their patrons to be very careful. >>reporter: adam says he was told his attackers also took off in a car. he didn't see it himself he says because he says he was briefly unconscious after the attack. he's hoping a witness will be able to give police a little bit more information about what he or she saw. now, councilman tommy wells and d.c. police chief kathy lanier say they do believe that police have been working hard to reduce the crime spike in robberies that was going on earlier in the year, however, police statistics do show that

there were 40 robberies, tony and allison, over this labor day weekend. >> thank you, melanie. d.c. police are facing a lawsuit from a man who says officers took his cell phone away from him when he tried to videotape them. the american civil liberties union helped earl staley, ii file the suit. staley says he tried to video what he says two officers beating a motor bike driver back in july. he said one vice officer chest bumped him and the other took his phone. >> he reached around my back and takes my -- reaches for my phone. he takes my phone from me and says it's illegal to take pictures of them while they're on a scene. >> people have a right to photograph the police. you can't tell them not to, you can't block their view, you can't -- you certainly can't take their camera. >> staley says that he went to the 70 police station, got his phone back, but then he

breaking news from baltimore this morning where several media outlets are reporting that former ravens owner art modell has died. he had been hospitalized yesterday at johns hopkins for organ failure. modell purchased the cleveland browns in 1961 and ended up moving the team to baltimore in 1996. that move made him a hero in charm city, but made him hated back in cleveland. the 87-year-old modell still held a 1% stake in the raifns. he served as -- ravens. he served as president of the nfl in the 1960s, overseeing the first negotiations of contracts with players and he was key in getting monday night football games on tv. >> what a huge name in our area. >> football. >> yeah, football. it is 7:16. gwent is here to talk about this thursday weather. >> hot and sticky, you're going to want to be prepared, pump up the ac today. drink lots of water, that's the key thing in terms of our forecast. let's begin with the fox 5 accuweather radar and we'll

university. south dakota avenue try to go get past west virginia montana and from florida to the tunnel. that's a check of your fox 5 on time traffic. >> thank you. we have a school closing to pass along to you this morning. this one is out of dutchess county. -- anne arundel county. crawford woods/crofton woods will be closed today. tony. allison, it could take up to a year and a half to determine what caused a deadly train derailment in maryland last month. the national transportation safety board has released a initial report. it says the train was traveling at 25 miles per hour when it derailed. that is the set speed limit in that part of ellicott city. two 19-year-old girls sitting on the train overpass were killed when the train cars carrying coal toppled over. here's your chance to weigh in on proposals to raise the fare for the dulles toll road. the first public hearing on the matter goes from 5:00 until 8:00 tonight at stonebridge

high school on hey road in ashburn. the metropolitan washington airport authority is considering a plan that would double the base rate to $4.50 by 2015 to help fund metro's new silver line. there will be two more hearings next week. bwi thorough good marshall airport is welcoming its newest carrier. spirit airlines will begin service today from bwi marshall to dallas-fort worth and fort lauderdale, florida. it comes on the heels in the busiest month in airport history. spirit is known for offering low airfares and charging fees for bringing luggage or using other services. coming up ahead, a rare beaver attack in northern virginia sends an elderly woman to the hospital. why the animal went after her next. and time to wake up your wardrobe with this fall's must- have trends. holly is getting us ready for fashions night out in georgetown. we'll check back in with her a little later.

an 83-year-old woman is recovering this morning after she was attacked by a rabid beaver. police say lillian petersen was swimming in lake barcroft in the bailey's crossroads section of fairfax county when she was bitten several times. now, a friend who was boating on the lake at the time came to her rescue. he beat the animal with a canoe paddle. petersen nearly lost her thumb in this attack. the number of west nile virus cases continues to spike nationwide. the cdc released new numbers wednesday and says there was a 25% jump from just last week from 1,500 cases up to nearly 2000. the number of deaths from the virus also jumped up 32% from 66 to 87%. the good news is that no new cases were reported in d.c., maryland or virginia. still, the maryland department of agricultural will spray for

mosquitoes in baltimore county tonight. if you were with us yesterday morning, you know it was a big day at the howard university college of medicine. >> tv's dr. oz was there along with lots of volunteers from howard to give prephysicals to more than 800 people. that's the most of any city dr. oz has visited. participants were screened for blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, weight and waist size. now, at the end of the day, dr. oz' team came up with a report card of the state of health in d.c. take a look. more than half of those tested have high blood pressure, 2/3 were overweight or obese, only 20% were at normal weight. the average for that is 33%. more young people in d.c. smoke compared with other cities that were tested by dr. oz. >> so we've got some work to do. still ahead, the first game of the nfl season is in the books. if you went to bed early like i did, you will be surprised at the outcome of this game. sports is next.

maps. the temperatures are up there right now, 79 right now at reagan national airport, 75 at baltimore. we have 70 degrees at fredrick. to the south 74 at fredricksburg. winchester at 72, martinsburg 71 and dulles at 75 degrees. yesterday temperatures were into the 90s, and today pretty much the same story. we're going to end up seeing mostly some sunshine, but a few clouds out there. we've got a system that will gradually push its way across the area, and then behind it a second one. so tomorrow we're actually going to have a little more sunshine than today, but it's still going to be hot as well. both days temperatures into the low 90s. but this is our weather maker for the weekend. we're talking some storms possible on saturday and sunday, so if you have any outdoor plans, make sure that you keep your eyes to the skies. here's a look at the tropics, hurricane leslie, not affecting the u.s. at all in terms of its forecast, but expected to become a category 2 hurricane by sunday as it heads out to the atlantic, taking more of a little bit of a northeasterly

the democratic ticket. joining us this morning paul glasstros, editor in chief of the washington monthly, he also cowrote president bill clinton's speech to the 2000 democratic national convention. thanks for being with us today. >> delightful to be here. thanks. >> so listening to former president bill clinton's hourlong speech, did you sort of have flashes back to -- flashbacks to 2000 when you help today write that speech for him? >> i sure did. no one delivers the substance of government and explanations of government better than bill clinton and we really worked hard in 2000 to do the same. he framed the choice in this election about as well as anyone could, and did for president obama the job of really blowing the smoke away from the issues as he believes the republicans have put it out there, and i think softened up

the terrain for president obama tonight. >> what i noticed in a lot of that speech is that he sort of debunking some of the things that have been put out there about the job of the administration, even that welfare ad that has been run that says basically president obama rolled back any sort of progress bill clinton made with welfare reform. was that -- how smart was that to do, how tactical was that as a president that i saw somewhere has a 70% approval rating today? >> he was exactly the right guy to go after that line of argument that the republicans have put out there. they've said that president obama weakend the work requirements of welfare, president clinton said that's absolutely not true. then he quoted a pollster for romney saying we don't let fact checkers dictate our message, and the president said, clinton said, that is one thing that is true. >> let's move along now. you have written that both mitt romney and president obama share this sort of interesting trait, and it is interesting

now just several months away from big election day, can you tell us what that is? >> so this is a first presidential campaign i can remember where you have two candidates, neither of whom are terribly comfortable talking about their records or at least big chunks of their records. bill clinton -- barack obama had passed this giant stimulus, the biggest economic stimulus since fdr. he never uses the word stimulus. he'll talk about little parts of that, but he just -- he knows that the american public didn't think the stimulus worked, so he doesn't bring it up. he basically put the banking sector back on its feet and he did it with no public money in record time, but he doesn't talk about it because he feels that the public thinks, oh, that's a bailout, even though the bailouts happened before he became president, whereas, same with mitt romney, he talks a little bit about the time he was a governor, but very, very seldom, and what he does, he mostly leaves out the single

biggest thing he accomplished as governor which was passing a universal or near universal healthcare plan with an individual mandate. why? well, because that's what president obama used as a model to create obamacare which governor romney wants to get rid of. so both of them are in a position where they struggle a little bit talking about some of their most important accomplishments. >> what does president obama need to do tonight to sort of get some of those independent voters who are really on the fence this time around? >> i think first of all he has to embrace his own accomplishments, and i think you've seen other speakers at this convention like duvall patrick, bill clinton last night doing that, explaining to the public what's happened. he needs to embrace it, he needs to give a litany of the things he's done, but do it in a way that leverages or becomes a point of leverage for what he's going to do. >> does he need to go line by line and sort of counter attack attacks that have been put upon

him at the convention last week and also with some of the ads out there, does he need to do that? >> i think he could do a little bit of that, but i think bill clinton did that for him. you'll notice that president clinton did not talk much about the going forward what the plan is. he's leaving that to president obama. what he did is clear the field for president obama. he took on the republican smoke screen and some of the republican arguments, very devastating in his doing that. and so i think it frees, it opens up the field for president obama to look forward and lay out an agenda. >> would you come back and talk to us again as we get closer to this election? >> would love nothing better. >> this is paul glasstros, he is editor in chief of the washington monthly. thank you so much. >> thank you. >> tony, over to you. >> thank you, both. 7:38 right now. the social media presence at both the democratic and republican conventions is soaring compared to previous years. in 2008 twitter reported a total of 360,000 tweets. this year twitter is almost at

it. there are some thunderstorms in that. they are actually getting some pockets of heavy rainfall here where you're seeing this into the yellow and the red areas here and it's getting a little more widespread. you can see it's moving ever so closely a little bit more to the east and the northeast. so we'll watch this during the course of the day and see how it kind of fares out. i don't anticipate this being around for the entire afternoon or becoming a washout for you at all. but we will keep an eye on it. let's go to our temperatures. it's a really warm start to your day. 79 degrees at national airport at this hour, 75 at baltimore, same at dulles and 73 at manassas, 72 at gaithersburg. a hot sticky day today, 90 degrees. we're talking about the showers as well as a mixture of some sun and clouds, partly sunny. expect the uncomfortableness to really be in the atmosphere once we move into the afternoon. yesterday it was 90 as well, so pretty much the same story, and once again, as i said, we'll keep an eye on those showers and that rainfall that's coming down. some of that, as i said, a little heavy and steady into areas to our west. >> thank you, gwen.

on-time traffic.." the democratic national convention comes to a dramatic close tonight when president barack obama takes the stage to accept the presidential nomination and make his case for re-election to the american people. the president's address will be inside the time warner cable arena instead of at the larger outdoor stadium organizers wanted because of the threat of severe weather in charlotte, north carolina. vice president joe biden will also take to the stage tonight. yesterday for the first time ever, a former president officially nominated an incumbent. that former president, of course, bill clinton, one of the party's most popular senior statesmen taking the stage around 10:30, he gave a long passionate arguments for the party's re-election. >> i want a man who believes with no doubt that we can build a new american dream economy dealership by innovation and creativity, by education and, yes, by cooperation. and by the way, after last night, i want a man who had the

good sense to marry michelle obama. [ applause and cheers ] >> after the speech, a surprise appearance by president obama, "surprise" being relative. then the roll call of states. we'll have much more on last night's big speech coming up in a live report in a few minutes. the secret service is investigating the reported theft of mitt romney's federal tax records. a letter sent to a tennessee political office and newspaper claims to have these papers and demanded a $1 million ransom to not release them. but romney's accounting firm says there is no evidence of his returns being stolen. new this morning, the german man facing first-degree murder charges for the death of his socialite wife will be back in court for a mental status hearing. the doctors say he is now competent to stand trial. prosecutors say he beat and then strangled 91-year-old viola drath in her georgetown home. his case is on hold because of

his behavior since his arrest. your chance to weigh in on how much you pay to drive on the dulles toll road. today the metropolitan washington airports authority will hold the first public hearing on its proposal to double fares to more than $4 by 2015. the extra cash would help fund metro's silver line. the hearing will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. this evening at stonebridge high school. if you can't make that meeting, you will get two more chances next week. another attack has a capitol hill neighborhood on edge. the violent robbery happened a few blocks from a similar crime that left a man in a coma. fox 5's melanie alnwick is live at police headquarters in northwest with more. melanie. reporter: the victim in this latest attack just moved to d.c. a week ago for an internship on capitol hill. tuesday night, he was punched, kicked and robbed of his cell phone. he says he didn't know about the previous attack on august 18th and now he has come forward because he wants to

make sure other people know what's going on. his name is casey adams. he says two men jumped him. they caught him off guard while he was on his cell phone walking home after midnight. the 26-year-old has cuts on his face and a fat lip and police are looking into whether his late-night attack is connected to another one a couple of weeks ago. tc maslin was beaten and robbed, as well. both crimes on north carolina avenue southeast near eastern market on capitol hill. police released surveillance video last week, they say people in this 2005 hyundai sonata were trying to use tc maslin's credit card near the crime scene. casey says his attackers also took off in a car but he didn't see it. he was on the phone with his wife when he was attacked. >> she had a nightmare that night and she said it's the worst thing you can think of to have someone that she cares about being assaulted like that and she's not able to do anything. she is in texas right now with her mother.

>> the police have stepped up patrols. they're quick to say that robberies are down in that area. but to the people that are impacted, especially through any type of violence, it doesn't feel that way. so i'm very concerned. and until this is under control, until we get it down to zero, nothing is enough until we stop this. >> reporter: now, ward 6 councilman tommy wells is asking the bars and taverns in the area to do their part to make sure that they warn their customers to be careful when they leave those establishments after closing. by the way, tony, police reports say that there were 40 robberies just over this labor day weekend in the city. >> seems like a lot. all right. melanie alnwick reporting, thank you very much. in other news, class will be back in session at a prince george's county high school this morning after a stabbing led to a lockdown yesterday. investigators say a 17-year-old student was hurt in the afternoon attack which happened about a half mile from northwestern high school in

hyattsville. so far, no word on a suspect or a motive. mosquitos are killing more people now in the united states. new numbers from the cdc show the number of cases of west nile virus shot up 25% in the past week to nearly 2,000. 87 people have died from the infection this year. texas has been the hardest hit but no new cases were reported in the district, maryland or virginia. hurricane isaac is long gone, but strong waved stirred up tar balls that were left over from the massive bp oil spill in 2010 forcing beaches in louisiana to close this morning. the tar balls are showing up in parts of the gulf coast that previously appeared to be clean. we have some sad news to report this morning from the world of sports. former baltimore ravens owner art modell has died. his son david says he passed away at 4 a.m.

at johns hopkins hospital this morning. modell had been hospitalized for organ failure. he bought the cleveland browns in 1961 and moved the teambaltimore in 1996 -- team to baltimore in 1996. this is the front page of the ravens' website this morning with a tribute to modell. his son was a special man who was loved by his sons, daughter-in-law and six grandchildren. moreover, he was adored by the entire baltimore community for his kindness and generosity and he loved baltimore." art modell was 87 years old. well, the nats' bats have come to life. >> boy, have they. >> really. >> still ahead at 8:00, wait until you hear how many home runs the home team hammered in the last two nights combined. >> plus, the first lady versus ann romney by the numbers. we are going to tell you who came out on top when it comes to tvs tuned in. >> the most popular man in the democratic party goes to bat

8:1. making headlines in the day ahead at 8:12, the second day of jury deliberations in the drew peterson murder trial. the 12-member panel got the case against the former illinois police officer yesterday but recessed with no clear sign that they were close to a verdict. also today, religious law takes center stage in the case against army major nadal hasan. he of course is the man accused of a shooting rampage at fort hood. today a judge will hold a hearing to determine if hasan has the right to refuse to shave citing muslim law. the judge has indicated that he will rule against hasan saying his religious rights don't trump army law. and finally, while all eyes are on next week's big apple announcement, amazon is expected to release its latest kindle fire tablet and ereader today. the current version is sold out on the company's website. it's 8:13 right now.

swimming in lake barcroft in the bailey's crossroads section of fairfax county when she was bitten several times. a friend on the lake came to her rescue beating the animal with a canoe paddle. she nearly lost her thumb in the attack. the united states says it's i have been go iraq evidence that iran is using iraqi airspace to deliver weapons to syria and some senators are warning iraq it risks damaging relations with the u.s. the rebels say they shot down another jet as they attacked an air base in the north. street-to-street clashes continue in the city of aleppo with heavy artillery barrages from regime forces. finally a crime out of a hollywood movie. two robbers strap a bomb on a major manager that they kidnapped and forced her to steal from her own branch. this happened yesterday morning in east los angeles. the manager was taken from her home and forced to wear an explosive device.

after removing the money out of the the ball, employees watched, she was told to throw the money out the door to the suspects waiting outside. bomb squad officials took the device off the woman and detonated it. no word on the suspect's identity. wow. >> where did this happen? >> east los angeles. >> wow. all right. gwen is here with more on today's weather. it's going to be a hot sticky day today so be prepared. yesterday it was hot, muggy, we got a repeat performance today. i think some people might have liked it so mother nature said let's do it again. >> how do i prepare for this? >> i think i'll stay inside. >> with the ac. let's look at the radar and we'll show you what's going on because some of you seeing some wet weather and there are some pockets of heavy rainfall here. you can see we have some lightning on our radar and that is where we have a severe thunderstorm warning that's currently in effect and that is for spotsylvania, stafford counties here. so just keep an eye out because

this is gradually moving its way to the east and there are as i said some pockets of heavy rainfall in this. don't expect it to be totally widespread and sticking around for the entire morning but you have to keep your eyes to the skies with this. let's go to the weather maps. temperatures warm for this hour of the morning. 80 at quantico, 78 d.c., 75 baltimore, 76 dulles, 70 hagerstown and 73 at martinsburg and we are talking a day where we have a system, frontal system, that's going to move through and that's going to set us up for the chance of showers into the course of the day. as we move through into tomorrow, we are going to see another front head through. we are going to have more sunshine, however, so that's not going to be all bad but it's going to be another day where it's hot, sticky and muggy a lot of moisture sticking around in the atmosphere to keep our dew points up. a lot of action in the tropics. let's take a look. this is hurricane leslie pushing its way through a little to the north at about 18 to 20 miles per hour and expected to take a little turn to the northeast become a category 2 by the time we hit

sunday and then look it heads straight for the canadian maritimes. so far no threat at all to the u.s. east coast. then we have our first cat-3 of the season, michael. michael right now looks like it's going to change in a category 2 by the time we hit sunday and then we'll watch it because the cone brings it northwest. this definitely does bear watching. here at home for today 90 degrees. we have 91 for your tomorrow. and saturday and sunday, thunderstorms with our fox 5 accuweather seven-day forecast. let's check in with tony. thank you very much, gwen. all right. well, everybody perspires, sometimes a lot and sometimes that poses a big problem. some folks perspire so much they don't want to leave the house. deena centofanti with our fox medical team joins us now live to show us a new solution to stop the sweating. good morning, deena. >> reporter: good morning, tony. you know, we have heard about botox injections, we have heard

about prescription deodorant or antiperspirant. now there is new technology out there that is permanent, it's relatively pain-free, for some people they say this is an answer to their prayers. it's just intolerable. reporter: 26-year-old alisa lewis has a serious perspiration problem. >> very embarrassing. i don't want to lift up my arm. i'm uncomfortable all the time during the winter, my clothes are getting wet from the sweat so i'm cold because i'm damp. >> we call it hyper hydrosis so it's excessive sweating so people normally sweat to cool their body off. this is above and beyond that so this is a medical condition. >> i have to enter in your measurements. >> reporter: after just about everything she came to a michigan dermatologist for a new treatment. >> this is electromagnetic energy and what it does is it cools the skin and then it sends energy about 3

matter of minutes. >> you have completely changed my life. i'm so ecstatic about this. it's fantastic. >> reporter: yeah. she really had a big hug for the doctor just so happy. tony, on average, the cost -- the company recommends two treatments. the initial and a follow-up cost is about $3,000 for both treatments. >> let me ask you a question. sometimes we need to sweat. is it dangerous to destroy those sweat glands? >> reporter: well, it's interesting. did a little homework. we have about 4,000 sweat glands in our entire body. 2% of them are under our arms. and so really, it doesn't have a serious effect on our ability to cool. you might notice a little more perspiration in other places. but really it does the same thing when we put on deodorant antiperspirant we're clogging them up so it's the same effect. the technology is in the d.c. area by the way. >> all right.

fascinating. now, millions of people struggle to get a good night's sleep every night. you say the solution to better shut-eye might be as easy as switching from white to pink. what does that mean? >> reporter: you know, we hear a lot about white noise which is that staticky noise you hear on the radio. now a new study finds that pink noise might really help you sleep better. this is such a serious problem. we are a nation filled with sleep deprived insomniac aks. it's the sound of rain falling, it's wind blowing, it's even a fan in your room, tony and what it does is apparently helps you sleep. this is a chinese study at peking university and they found that people exposed to pink noise had a more restful sleep. in this day and age where people are trying to avoid medication, seems like a simple potential solution. [ sound of rain ] >> i have used it and it works but why does it work? >> reporter: they say our brains are very sensitive to sound even when we're sleeping.

[ laughter ] >> didn't realize. >> reporter: we're out here talking about derek thomas this morning with thomas landscapes. this is -- well, guess every part of the year everybody has questions about we like to do the garden guy. you have some good questions and i read through them, wow, this is a question i have all the time. so let's go ahead and get started with the first one. this is about a rowhouse? >> this is about a rowhouse.

just to remind the viewers, they can tweet these to me now, too, @thomas garden guy is the -- and i try to be a good tweeter. so we'll answer your questions. the first one is about a rowhouse and it's that, you know, that space between the sidewalk and the street that gets neglected. [ signal breakup ] and they wanted to in what they could put in there to withstand the traffic along with, you know, our four-legged friends and some neglect. and i put together some plants that are decorative but yet really, really hearty. first of all, loriope. it's just goin into bloom. it's a tough plant. these barberry are tough. you can get color into the tree

box by using them. they have a few thorns but it's not a bad plant if you are putting in the tree box. and also, some of your evergreens like this blue star juniper. it's a really neat plant. it's a low growing plant. and the one thing that you want to make sure before you plant out any of those tree box areas whether you're in d.c., maryland, virginia, the local viewing areas that you check your local laws as to what's permitted for planting there. >> reporter: i have these two and i want to let people know they are neglected a lot and they are still surviving so go right ahead, that he a good idea. let's go to the next question. somebody wants to know what i can plant now to get the garden going and looking good. >> you know, we were talking about this before. we're in that weird transitory mode. it's not quite fall and summer is like unofficially over. there's a lot of stuff that you can get into the garden and i think this particular person has a function coming up and they said, you know, the

perennials are done but want something that's attractive for bang for their buck. this is a fire power nandina. it's a great plant with the chartreuse foliage. as fall comes along it will turn in a brilliant red and copper tone and it keeps its leaves all winter so it's attractive now an throughout the winter. things like astors and crysanthemums have started making their appearance in garden centers. the nice thing about the astor is that once it gets done blooming out since they have kind of forced it to bloom early, you can cut it back by half. and if you do that, the plant will flush out and most likely give you a second blooming. >> okay. >> so that's nice. and if you want to take a chance with pansies, you can. or some of the ornamental grasses. the reason i say take a chance with the pansies is it's still too warm to put them in. >> the last question.

>> reporter: they say my orchid has sticky leaves and drips sticky stuff on the table. is this normal? >> right. this is from one ofyour viewers, stephanie. i promised i would give her a shoutout from one of our viewers, stephanie. she commented there was sticky stuff oozing from the leaves of the orchid and actually falling on to her table. your orchids should not be oozing stickiness and most likely i didn't see the plant but she either has scale or mealy. those are two insects that suck the sugars from plants. they particularly like orchids. and you will get that stickiness because as they feed on the sugars they are overfeeding and some of the sugar is falling on the surfaces. your orchids should be very, very clean. the leaves should be, you know, the new leaves should be nice and shiny. they should be -- you shouldn't really have any type of blemishes on the leaves. one of the things that you want to make sure with orchids is

don't give them cold water in the evening because that spots the least. but you should not see any kind of dripping sap or anything from your orchids. >> reporter: can it be saved if it already has it? >> you can use an alcohol solution and if you see the bugs actually put alcohol on them and that usually renders them, you know, nonexistent. but sometimes it's just a little bit too much work. particularly, you know, it's about 20 or 30 bucks for an orchid and if it has a problem and you're going to be spending a lot on another one -- get yourself another one. >> derek thomas with thomas landscapes. >> @thomas garden guy or send us a question through fox-5. >> myfoxdc.com. back to you guys. >> thank you. i happen to know that sarah loves those orchids but they sometimes go wrong for her. >> that's what i understand. they call it disneyland for shoppers. tonight more than 100 shops,
